Creative hacks for glamping in Sicily (yes, even under €1,500)
If you’ve been following this glamping series, you’ll know we’ve talked about bases before — but stick with me! I promise this one goes further and these glamping hacks in Sicily will help you get started. In this article, we’ll look at clever, creative ways to build your entire glamping setup on a budget, including off-grid water, bathrooms, kitchens, and energy solutions. You’ll also find two complete quick-start bundles at the end — one for under €1,500.
The goal? To help you see that creating a beautiful, low-impact retreat space doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.
1. The base or platform
Let’s start simple. If your land is already flat and covered with grass or compact soil, you don’t need a base at all — you can pitch your tent directly on it. That’s €0 and zero permits needed.
For slightly uneven terrain, compact the soil and add a layer of gravel for drainage. If you want to elevate your tent, use recycled wood or pallets for a removable deck — still temporary, still low-impact, and often not requiring permits.
Cost range: €0 – €300
See my post about the types of bases here
2. The tent and structure
If you’re just starting, the most accessible model is the Sibley Traveler Bell Tent (3m) — €549. It’s light, easy to set up, and ideal for testing your glamping concept.
For larger or more professional setups, try the Sibley ProTech Bell Tent (5m) — €1,099. Durable, elegant, and perfect for hosting guests in style.
Check out my post about tents here.
Canvas tents and hybrid pergola setups both work beautifully. The key is keeping them movable, so they’re not seen as permanent constructions — meaning you often don’t need a building permit.
3. Glamping hacks for Bathroom solutions
Bathrooms are a basic necessity but they can also become part of the experience. A creative glamping hack is a dry composting toilet. It connects guests with nature. It also closes the circle of sustainability. Done well, it’s clean, odor-free, and eco-luxurious.
If you’re on a tight budget, you can easily build your own dry toilet. The one below was made from scrap wood, a €3 toilet seat, and two recycled food-grade buckets (€2 each). The toilet paper holder was made from PVC pipe, and sawdust from a local mill kept it fresh — one bag lasted three months.

If you prefer ready-made options:
- DIY Dry Toilet Kit (€99) — build it yourself and add a small 12V fan for ventilation.
- Ecosave Dry Toilets for Tiny Houses — higher-end versions with built-in fans and sleek design (~€700+).
4. Water and shower
A gravity-fed tank placed at the highest point of your land can provide water pressure without electricity. Combine it with a solar shower bag or a gas-on-demand water heater for comfort.
For ideas on simple yet beautiful setups, see this Spanish article: DIY Outdoor Shower Ideas (in Spanish).

Cost range: €25 – €400

5. Electricity. Glamping hacks for electricity in sunny Sicily
A compact solar generator gives you lights, device charging, and small appliance power — all off-grid. For example, the Bluetti EB3A Portable Power Station (~€299 with solar panel) is an excellent choice that includes panel options.
6. Kitchen and food
A good glamping kitchen doesn’t need to be built-in. Keep it simple, movable, and charming.
Create a temporary outdoor kitchen using a pergola or wooden roof, a stainless steel countertop, a gas hob, and a small elevated water tank for washing up. Drain the water through gravel or sand to irrigate nearby plants. For retreats, a food truck or a mobile chef setup can also work beautifully.

For inspiration, see this Simple DIY Outdoor Kitchen Guide by Nordic Nest. It shows how basic materials and clean design can look stunning.
- IKEA GRILLSKÄR Sink Unit (~€240, Italy availability may vary)
- Campingaz 2 Burner Hob (~€120)
Cost range: €200 – €800
7. Furniture and decor
Go local and simple: pallets, woven rugs, reclaimed wood, and natural fabrics. Sicily is full of artisans and small shops with beautiful handmade objects that elevate even minimal setups.
Cost range: €100 – €400
8. Legal and permit hacks for glamping in Sicily
Rules vary per commune, but here’s what we know:
- Private use: Perfect for family and friends — minimal bureaucracy.
- Retreat model: Run experiences where accommodation is secondary. Works as a gray area in most communes.
- Seasonal setups: Ideal for agricultural land — temporary and movable structures.
- Agriturismo: Long-term option for those wanting to formalize hospitality.
Always check with your local comune first, and remember: keeping things non-permanent makes everything simpler.
9. Start small: a one-season pilot
The best way to learn is by doing. Test your setup for one season, host a few guests, adjust, and expand next year.
